Thinking Made Visual
“Design is thinking made visual”
~ Saul Bass
Saul Bass was an American graphic designer and Oscar-winning filmmaker, best known for his design of motion-picture title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos.
What
What does Saul Bass mean? It means that ideas are put onto paper, so to say. Thinking is given life through a visual format enabling all to see the idea. Design is not one sided either, it is multifaceted and requires a thought process. And with good design this process can be seen, understood, and experienced by the onlooker.
How
How can we learn from this? We can learn the importance and value of thoughtful design. Great design can only come from deep thought and great design must be given the time to achieve this. The time to develop concepts, time for trial and error, iterations, and finishing touches. Without the allowance of this time design quality will suffer.
Why
Why is this important to design? Because success comes from satisfied customers and this is important for business. Design will represent your business values and it is very important to portray these values accurately, in a manner which is suitable for your target audience. Design lacking deep thought will misrepresent your business and can cost you in the long run.
Great design is an important investment for your business and with this investment you can influence peoples perception of your business to be as solid as its brand image. If you get it right the first time you’ll most likely never have to do it again. One cost for building a thoughtful brand identity will stand the test of time and will provide a solid foundation for continuing to represent your business from thereon out.
